Microneedling for Stretch Marks: Does It Work and How Many Sessions?

TL;DR: Microneedling can noticeably soften stretch marks by triggering new collagen. A 2024 review of 11 studies found it works about as well as lasers, with less risk of dark marks afterward. Newer red stretch marks respond better than old white ones, and most studies use 3 to 4 monthly sessions. At Skinfinity Aesthetics, microneedling is $199 per session or $650 for 4. It improves stretch marks, but it won’t erase them.

You’ve tried the oils. The creams. The “miracle” lotions from the pharmacy. And the lines are still there.

If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Stretch marks are one of the most common reasons people ask me about microneedling at my Mississauga clinic. Some come after pregnancy. Others after weight loss, a growth spurt, or months of building muscle at the gym.

Microneedling for stretch marks is one of the few treatments with real research behind it. But it’s also easy to oversell. Some clinics promise to “erase” stretch marks, and that’s simply not true.

So in this guide, I’ll give you the honest version. You’ll learn why stretch marks form, whether microneedling actually works on them, why newer red marks respond better than old white ones, how many sessions most people need, and what it costs. I’ll also compare microneedling with lasers and PRP, so you can decide what fits your skin and budget.

What Causes Stretch Marks, and Why Are Some Red and Some White?

According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), stretch marks are a type of scar that forms when skin stretches or shrinks quickly. That sudden change tears the fibres that hold the skin together.

The AAD lists the most common triggers as pregnancy, growth spurts during puberty, rapid weight changes and muscle gain. Long-term use of corticosteroid creams, hormones and family history can also play a part.

Stretch marks change colour as they age:

Type What it looks like Age
Red stretch marks (striae rubrae) Pink, red or purple, sometimes slightly raised and itchy Newer
White stretch marks (striae albae) Pale, silvery, often slightly sunken Older

Here’s the honest part. The AAD explains that, like any scar, stretch marks are permanent, but treatment can make them less noticeable. It also notes that no single treatment works for everyone. That’s the mindset to bring into any treatment, including microneedling.

Does Microneedling Work for Stretch Marks?

Yes, with realistic expectations. A 2024 meta-analysis of 11 studies found that microneedling improved stretch marks, worked about as well as lasers, and led to less post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation than other treatments. It softens and blends stretch marks rather than removing them.

Microneedling uses a pen with very fine needles to create tiny, controlled channels in the skin. Your skin responds by producing new collagen, helping rebuild the support that was damaged when the stretch mark formed. A review in Dermatologic Surgery describes microneedling as a safe, minimally invasive treatment for several skin concerns, including stretch marks.

The research is encouraging:

Many people also find microneedling helps their skin texture in other ways. If you’ve wondered about the bigger picture, I’ve written about whether microneedling is worth it, and about microneedling for acne scars, which works through the same collagen-building process.

Red vs White Stretch Marks: Which Respond Better?

Newer red stretch marks respond better, but older white ones improve too. In a 2026 study in Aesthetic Surgery Journal, red stretch marks improved by about 49% six months after treatment, compared with about 42% for white ones, after 4 monthly microneedling sessions.

That study compared treated stretch marks with untreated ones on the opposite side of the same person’s body. Both types got better. The authors concluded that treating stretch marks while they’re still red can give better results than waiting until they turn white.

What does that mean for you?

  • If your stretch marks are still pink or red: this is the best time to start. Don’t wait for them to fade on their own.
  • If your stretch marks are white and years old: you can still expect improvement, but set realistic goals. You may need more sessions, and the change will be more about texture than colour.

How Many Sessions Do You Need?

Most people need 3 to 4 microneedling sessions, spaced about a month apart. That’s the schedule used in most of the research, including the 2016 comparison trial (3 sessions) and the 2026 study (4 sessions). Results keep improving for months after your last treatment.

Here’s a rough timeline:

  • Session 1: Your skin starts its healing response. You won’t see much change yet.
  • Sessions 2 to 4: Texture begins to soften, and the edges of the marks start to blend.
  • 3 to 6 months after your last session: This is when the best results usually show. In the 2026 study, improvement kept building between 3 and 6 months after treatment ended.

Older, deeper white stretch marks may need a few extra sessions. At your consultation, I’ll look at the colour, width and depth of your marks before recommending a plan.

Microneedling vs Laser vs PRP for Stretch Marks

Microneedling isn’t the only option. Here’s how the main treatments compare:

Treatment How it compares Good to know
Microneedling About as effective as lasers, with higher patient satisfaction Less risk of dark marks, but more discomfort
Laser treatments Similar results overall in the 2024 review Less painful than microneedling
Microneedling with PRP Better scar scores than microneedling alone in a 2024 trial Uses your own blood plasma, so it costs more
RF microneedling Showed significant improvement in the 2024 review Adds radiofrequency heat for deeper collagen stimulation

A few more details are worth knowing. In the PRP trial, 86.6% of people who had PRP with microneedling were very satisfied, compared with 73.3% who were satisfied after microneedling alone.

At Skinfinity Aesthetics, we offer both standard microneedling and Secret RF, our radiofrequency microneedling device. If you’re comparing options, you can also read about laser skin resurfacing as an alternative.

How Much Does Microneedling for Stretch Marks Cost in Mississauga?

At Skinfinity Aesthetics, standard microneedling is $199 per session or $650 for a 4-session package. Secret RF microneedling is $450 per session or $1,600 for 4. Since most people need 3 to 4 sessions for stretch marks, a package is usually the better value. You can see full details on our microneedling in Mississauga page.

Treatment Single session 4-session package
Microneedling $199 $650
Secret RF microneedling $450 $1,600

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Consultation: your first visit is a $25 consultation, so we can check your stretch marks and skin type first.
  • Treatment area: larger areas, like the abdomen or thighs, may take longer than the face.
  • HST is added on top.

Side Effects, Pain and Who Should Wait

Microneedling is generally well tolerated. Here’s what to expect.

Pain. Microneedling is more uncomfortable than laser treatment, according to the 2024 review. We use numbing cream before treatment to keep you comfortable.

Redness. Your skin will look red and feel a little tender for a short time afterward. In the 2026 study, post-treatment reactions were temporary, and no adverse events were reported.

Darker skin tones. This is good news if you have medium to dark skin. Microneedling carries less risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, the dark marks some treatments can leave behind, than other options.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding. I recommend waiting until after you’ve finished. The AAD also advises checking with your doctor before using stretch mark products while pregnant or breastfeeding, because some products containing retinol may be harmful to a baby.

The Bottom Line on Microneedling for Stretch Marks

Microneedling is one of the better-studied treatments for stretch marks. It works about as well as lasers, carries a lower risk of dark marks, and keeps improving your skin for months after treatment.

Set realistic expectations, though. It softens and blends stretch marks rather than erasing them. Red stretch marks respond best, so treating early makes a difference. Most people need 3 to 4 sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can microneedling get rid of stretch marks completely?

No. It can make them much less noticeable, but stretch marks are a type of scar. The AAD explains that they’re permanent, though treatment can make them less noticeable. Most people see softer texture and better blending with the surrounding skin.

Does microneedling work on old white stretch marks?

Yes, though results are a little smaller than for red ones. In a 2026 study, white stretch marks improved by about 42% six months after treatment, compared with about 49% for red marks.

How long until I see results from microneedling for stretch marks?

You’ll usually notice gradual changes after your second or third session. The best results tend to appear 3 to 6 months after your last treatment, as improvement kept building over that time in a 2026 study.

Is microneedling or laser better for stretch marks?

They’re similar overall. A 2024 review found they were about equally effective, but microneedling had higher patient satisfaction and less risk of dark marks. In one head-to-head trial, 90% improved with microneedling versus 50% with CO2 laser.

Can I get microneedling for stretch marks after pregnancy?

Yes, once you’re no longer pregnant. If you’re breastfeeding, check with your doctor first, especially about any creams, since the AAD notes some retinol products may be harmful to a baby. Starting while your stretch marks are still red can give better results.
